While foreign cartoons are very popular with viewers and see huge box office success, Vietnam’s 60-year-old animation scene is characterised more by television series or exposure on the internet.
According to experts, Vietnamese cartoons are outdated in style, lack investment, and have little in the way of good scripts.
However, some analysts believe there could be a brighter future due to more private sector productions.
After being posted on YouTube, the cartoon Con Rong Chau Tien or Offspring of Dragon and Fairy produced by VinTaTa has proved popular.
Tran Thu Hien, general director of Vietnam Animation claimed investment would improve Vietnam’s animated features.
VinTaTa launched a VND2 billion (USD91,000) animation script contest which attracted 800 entries from Vietnam and abroad.
The first prize worth VND1 billion was granted to script entitled Monta Monkey in the bizarre Galaxy by four young people. Other prizes were presented to seven individuals and groups.
The winning script will be produced this year.
A representative from VinTaTa said that the firm has completed construction of two modern studios in Hanoi and HCM City.
