Boeing introduced four key defense and security aircraft at the 2024 Vietnam International Defense Exhibition, emphasizing multi-role capabilities suited for defense, surveillance, and humanitarian missions.

Dale McDowall, Boeing’s Vice President for Southeast Asia Defense, Space, and Security Business Development, explained that while Boeing is widely known for commercial aviation, the company also excels in defense technology.

Among the showcased products were the heavy-lift Chinook CH-47 helicopter, the multi-role MH-139 Grey Wolf helicopter, the ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and the Wave Glider unmanned surface vessel.

The Chinook CH-47, often dubbed the "sky monster," can lift over 8 tons - far surpassing the capacity of typical helicopters, which lift only 3–5 tons. McDowall highlighted its suitability for Vietnam's unique challenges, such as mountainous terrain, remote islands, and frequent natural disasters like typhoons and floods.

The Chinook’s ability to perform rescue operations without requiring landing - hovering near cliffs or coastal areas - makes it an asset for disaster response and humanitarian missions.

Boeing also presented the ScanEagle UAV, a proven platform with 1.5 million flight hours globally. It offers endurance of 18–19 hours, a maximum altitude of 5,800 meters, and the ability to carry payloads for maritime security, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

For maritime applications, Boeing highlighted the Wave Glider, an unmanned surface vessel capable of extended operations in coastal and open waters.

In addition to showcasing cutting-edge aircraft, Boeing has been supporting Vietnam’s Coast Guard with equipment installation, trial flights, and training in English and technical operations for maintenance and usage.

Boeing’s participation in the exhibition underscores its ambition to strengthen partnerships with Vietnam and expand its role in addressing the country’s defense and humanitarian needs.
