OUROBOROS by Hà Minh

Opening: Thurs 06 Apr 2023, 06:30 pm – 09 pm
Exhibition: 07 – 25 Apr 2023, 09:30 am – 06 pm
Work Room Four
31 alley 67 Tô Ngọc Vân, Hà Nội

The Ouroboros is an ancient circular symbol that depicts a snake or dragon devouring its own tail and is used to represent the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth, just like this potent alchemical symbol of the perpetual nature of existence, this body of work represents beginnings and ends in multiple contexts. Ouroboros is Hà Minh’s first solo exhibition of paintings and this body of work has been created over a period of three years during an exceptional time in Ha Minh’s life, creativity has been her rudder since her early years and Ouroboros marks the beginning of something new and the end of a chapter of creative practice. A self-taught painter, Hà has always been propelled by an innate desire to draw and create, she has honed her incredible raw talent through focused independent study, committing to drawing almost entirely from life to acutely develop her capabilities.

Paintings for the series began during the isolated times of COVID 19 social distancing, the work centres around a deeply personal, intimate subject – the artist’s teddy bear. Hà began her painting studies by familiarising herself with classical techniques and methods based on studies of the human form from life. In lockdown this became impossible, she turned to the simple props she had available to maintain her practice. Teddy became Hà’s muse, model, silent witness and confidant. Navigating the complexities of her life, her self identity and dedicating herself to her work in a conservative and sometimes hostile home environment as a young trans woman – alone.

The paintings in the series form together a space of fantasy and child-like wonder as well as a space of self-introspection where Hà comes to terms with, and embraces her womanhood and her burgeoning identity as a queer artist. This exhibition is very special to her because she feels as though she is coming out again, this time not to the world but to herself: “it’s ok to be a woman in this world, you will be fine (and you can even thrive)”.

Exhibition “Yakishime – Earth Metamorphosis”

Opening: 10:00, Tues 04 Apr 2023, 10 am
Exhibition: 05 – 20 Apr 2023, 08:30 am – 05 pm
2nd Floor – B building of Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum
66 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum, proudly present a new traveling exhibition “YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis”

The exhibition “Yakishime – Earth Metamorphosis” focuses on the ceramics technique yakishime, firing unglazed wares at high temperatures. While being one of the most basic means of producing ceramics, yakishime has developed in distinctive directions in Japan. This exhibition introduces an aspect of Japanese culture by examining yakishime from the earliest examples to contemporary works.

The earliest known yakishime wares date to the fourth or fifth centuries. However, it was only from the twelfth through the seventeenth centuries that this technique became solidly established and used in a substantial part of the production at major ceramics centers in Japan, including Bizen, Shigaraki, and Tokoname. This exhibition presents functional yakishime wares of two types: utensils used in tea ceremony – a major influence on the development of Japanese traditional culture, and tableware – an essential part of everyday life in Japan. It also presents a wide range of non-utilitarian objects created by contemporary ceramics artists who work with yakishime.

Celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Phalguna, which usually falls in February or March, Holi is a celebration marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring, the victory of good over evil, and the bonding of relationships.

On the day of Holi, streets and towns are covered in rainbow shower as people throw coloured powder into the air and smear them on others. Each colour bears a different meaning. For example, red represents love, passion and fertility, blue is the colour of Lord Krishna’s face and the sky and oceans while yellow illustrates knowledge and learning, symbolising happiness, meditation, and peace, etc. People also splash water on each other, whether by water guns or balloons filled with coloured water flung from rooftops. Over the year, Holi has become more and more popular and was adapted into several variations around the world. One of which is the Colour me run festival.

The Gardeners was originally borrowed from the poem book title “The Gardeners” by poet Rabindranath Tagore. The journey of discovery, creation and artistic work is sometimes very similar to the work process of gardeners that requiring patience, calmness and a peaceful attitude in harmony with the currents of the nature. Because sometimes, artists have not found what they want in art, but the process of artistic work leads them to creative and successful values that they are not looking for. Tagore’s poetic, erudite, philosophical lyrics have inspired young authors’ latest works.

V-Art Space, Floor 1 Ciputra Club, Bac Tu Liem District

After the success of two solo exhibitions “It” (2005) and “The Corner to See” (2014), visual artist Tran Trung Thanh remarks on another decade of hard work with the “Harmonize” exhibition. The artist’s journey in search of answers to questions about history, the development of society, and the intersection of life, science, and art is recorded via more than 30 oil paintings. Accompanying the exhibition is artist Vuong Pat Cam and his impressive works about Hanoi.

Meticulous, persistent, and profound are what we can say about the process of Tran Trung Thanh creating his artworks. Since the Jeunes Regard competition for young artists in 2004, Tran Trung Thanh’s painting style has become more and more bold.

Neither surrealism nor hyperrealism, Tran Trung Thanh encodes his notions of life into unique characters. Each painting presents a social issue of Vietnam or the world along with questions about history, international diplomacy, and the intersection of life – science – art.

“Harmonize” is the third solo exhibition of artist Tran Trung Thanh.
