Nguyen Mai Anh from Hanoi booked a four-star hotel for her family’s holiday in Ha Long. On the first day, they had to experience a power cut. The hotel had to use an electricity generator, but it was only enough to power the escalator and fridge.

Her children felt so hot that she had to decide to move to another hotel.

Most visitors to Ha Long Bay in the first two weeks of June encountered power outages.

According to a manager of a hotel in Bai Chay Ward, the hotel faced a massive spate of room cancellations affecting 70 reservations because of power outage concerns.

Many local hotels have spent hundreds of millions of VND buying power generators. But they have passed on these costs to visitors.

A woman from the northern province of Ninh Binh said that her family was given a surcharge of VND300,000 (USD12.76) per night to pay for the hotel’s generator. She did not agree with the charge and cancelled the room and booked another hotel.

Hoang Huyen from Hanoi booked a hotel in Hanoi one month ago. However, she was informed that she would have to pay VND100,000-300,000 per night if the hotel had to use power generators.

Van Don District People’s Committee in Quang Ninh reported that the number of visitors to the locality had dropped by 35 percent to 12,700 a week due to the power cuts.
