Recent reports about HBO discontinuing its broadcast have caused confusion among viewers in Vietnam. However, HBO is not shutting down in Vietnam - it is only being removed from the HBO Go package. The channel will continue to be available on pay TV platforms such as cable and IPTV.

HBO remains available on pay TV platforms

A message appearing on some online streaming platforms reads:

"Starting from 12:00 AM on March 1, HBO will no longer be available in the HBO Go package across the Asia-Pacific region."

This has led many subscribers to believe that HBO is leaving Vietnam altogether, but that is not the case.

According to HBO representatives in Vietnam, the change only affects the inclusion of HBO and Cinemax channels in the HBO Go package, aligning Vietnam with HBO Go’s regional distribution policy.

Across the Asia-Pacific, HBO Go has only offered on-demand video content (VOD) rather than live channel broadcasts. Vietnam was the only exception where HBO channels were bundled into the HBO Go package.

"From March 1, HBO Go will only distribute VOD content and will no longer include live channels. However, HBO and Cinemax will continue broadcasting on cable, IPTV, and other pay TV platforms in Vietnam," an HBO representative clarified.

HBO and Cinemax: Two iconic movie channels in Vietnam

HBO and Cinemax have long been household names in Vietnam, known for delivering blockbuster movies and high-quality TV series.

Since gaining popularity in Vietnam in the early 2000s, HBO has become a go-to choice for Hollywood hits, while Cinemax has specialized in action, thriller, and horror films.

Despite the recent changes, HBO remains available in Vietnam through traditional pay TV services, ensuring that Vietnamese audiences can continue to enjoy their favorite movies and series.
