The number of organizations and enterprises that face five cybersecurity breaches a year has increased by 53 percent.

Fortinet 2023 Global Cybersecurity Skills Gap Report estimates that about 3.4 million more skilled cybersecurity professionals are currently needed globally.

The report pointed out that many cybersecurity teams which have been understaffed now have to bear a heavier burden, struggling to update thousands of warnings about daily threats to find solutions to protect organizations’ equipment and data.

Furthermore, as a result of the vacancy of many IT positions because of the lack of cybersecurity skills, 68 percent of surveyed organizations said they face  increased risks in cyberspace.

Security breach cases are on the rise, with 84 surveyed organizations reporting that they faced at least one breach in the last 12 months, higher than the 80 percent last year.

The latest statistics showed that nearly 50 percent of organizations were breached in the last 12 months which caused damage of $1 million, higher than the 38 percent that organizations reported last year.

The number of cyberattacks is expected to continue to increase. Nearly 65 percent of organizations think the figure will increase in the next 12 months, which makes it more urgent to recruit officers for key cybersecurity posts to solve organizations and enterprises’ security challenges.

Nguyen Gia Duc, director of Fortinet Vietnam said in Asia Pacific, Vietnam is among the countries which face high cyberattack risks. Fortinet believes that up to 90 percent of leaders of organizations and enterprises in the region have concerns about cybersecurity and support the recruitment of more cybersecurity personnel.

“This is an alarm bell for organizations in Vietnam. They need to take more practical actions to protect their organizations right now, starting with the strengthening of training in cybersecurity for their IT staff, or recruiting officers with technology certificates,” Duc said.

Vu Ngoc Son, director of NCS, told VietNamNet that Vietnam now only has over 50,000 workers in the field of cybersecurity, while the country needs 700,000.

And if noting that Vietnam is striving to become a cyberinformation security powerhouse, and provide products and services to the world, the current workforce is facing a severe shortage.

Meanwhile, new graduates lack practical skills and most of them need retraining for six months or one year. Therefore, tech firms have to struggle fiercely to scramble for experienced workers.

The solution to the problem, according to experts, is to send students to enterprises for internships. They should have an internship time of one or two years.
