Qualcomm has announced its acquisition of Movian AI Joint Stock Company, the generative AI division of VinAI and part of the Vingroup ecosystem. The transaction's value was not disclosed.

Previously, Movian AI operated as the generative AI unit of VinAI Research and Application Joint Stock Company (VinAI), itself a subsidiary within the broader Vingroup technology ecosystem.

In its official statement, Qualcomm praised VinAI as a leading AI research company, well known for its expertise in generative AI, machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing.

The integration of VinAI’s cutting-edge research and development (R&D) capabilities with Qualcomm’s decades-long legacy of deep technological research is expected to enhance the creation of breakthrough innovations.

“This acquisition highlights our commitment to allocating essential resources for R&D, positioning Qualcomm as a key driver of the next wave of AI innovation,” said Jilei Hou, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Qualcomm.

According to Hou, by recruiting top-tier talent from VinAI, Qualcomm is strengthening its ability to deliver advanced AI solutions that benefit a wide range of industries and users.

The American chipmaker also emphasized the leadership of Dr. Bui Hai Hung, who led VinAI’s generative AI team and is a former member of Google DeepMind. Qualcomm noted that the team brings world-class expertise in AI.

Following the sale of Movian AI, Vingroup continues to operate other subsidiaries in the fields of AI and scientific technology, including VinMotion, VinBigData, VinRobotics, VinITIS, VinHMS, VinCSS, and VinTech.

Previously, in December 2024, Vingroup also sold another AI subsidiary, VinBrain, to Nvidia, a global leader in AI and semiconductors.
