The funds, which Professor Thach had saved over the years from his salary, teaching, and writing, were originally intended for his retirement.
On September 10, Professor Thach withdrew his savings and, through a media outlet in Ho Chi Minh City, contributed the full amount to help those in the North suffering from the devastating floods.
He explained that, after reading the news and following social media reports, he was deeply moved by the hardship faced by many in Northern provinces due to the flooding.
"People need both material and emotional support to overcome this disaster. I just want to do everything I can to help," said Professor Thach.
Despite giving away his savings, Professor Thach assured that his daily living expenses are covered by his monthly pension. "I may no longer have savings, but I still receive my monthly retirement benefits," he said with a smile.
Professor Le Ngoc Thach, a former lecturer in the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Science, has taught many generations of chemistry students in Southern Vietnam.
In addition to his teaching and scientific research, he has authored numerous textbooks and reference materials. Although retired, Professor Thach continues to teach part-time at the university.
