Vietnam wishes that countries continue to actively contribute to maintaining peace and stability on the basis of international law in the East Sea, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said on February 25.

The East Sea is a semi-closed expanse of water abutting seven countries - Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore. 

Countries participating in a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly’s 75th session on December 8 highlighted the importance of the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 

As the Chair of ASEAN 2020, Vietnam has issued a Declaration of the Chairman of the 37th ASEAN Summit.

The disputes in the East Sea need to be resolved by the concerned parties, with cooperation of the international community as well as the region, said a Vietnamese expert.

The country always supports the peaceful settlement of territorial disputes on the basis of respect for international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
