90 universities participate in the national mathematics Olympiad.

The National Student and University Mathematics Olympiad has returned to Ho Chi Minh City after more than 20 years, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Vietnam’s reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025).

The competition is organized by the Vietnam Mathematical Society in collaboration with Saigon University.

Associate Professor Dr. Pham Hoang Quan, a mathematician and rector of Saigon University, described the Olympiad as a major academic arena for students across the country who share a passion for mathematics.

It is also a platform to nurture and discover young mathematical talent. Over the years, many participants have gone on to achieve remarkable success, helping to elevate Vietnam’s standing in mathematics both regionally and internationally.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Doan Trung Cuong, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Mathematical Society, the Olympiad is a place for gathering, exchange, and competition in mathematics.

It plays a vital role in improving the quality of mathematics education, fostering students’ enthusiasm for the subject, and promoting academic excellence while identifying future talent in the field.

“Mathematics is not only the foundation of science, technology, and other academic disciplines - it is also a critical tool for reasoning and problem-solving in real life. In today’s era, mathematics is a key to unlocking the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and leveraging its advancements to drive national development,” said Dr. Cuong.

This year’s Olympiad features a record-breaking 90 university delegations. The inaugural event, held in 1993, drew participation from only three institutions.

The last time the Olympiad was hosted in southern Vietnam was in 2003. Now, after more than two decades, the event has made its long-awaited return to Ho Chi Minh City in celebration of the nation's reunification milestone.
