At the Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024, the Vietnamese PM invited U.S. defense and aerospace companies to deepen cooperation through technology transfer and training.
On December 18, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with representatives of U.S. aerospace, defense, and security firms participating in the second Vietnam International Defense Expo.
The delegation, organized by the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council (USABC), included leading companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Bell Textron, AeroVironment, and Blue Halo.
The Prime Minister highlighted the growing comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States, noting that economic, trade, and investment collaboration remains a cornerstone of their bilateral relations.
He emphasized Vietnam's ambition to achieve double-digit annual growth by exploring emerging sectors, including aerospace, maritime industries, and renewable energy.
Call for technology transfer and investment
The Prime Minister urged U.S. firms to enhance trade, technology transfer, and investment in Vietnam, particularly in aerospace and defense. He also called for initiatives to train high-quality personnel for Vietnam’s developing industries.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting U.S. businesses, he stressed the importance of a mutually beneficial approach where risks and rewards are shared equally. Vietnam, he added, is ready to address regulatory challenges and foster a favorable business environment for American enterprises.
USABC Vice President Brian McFeeters congratulated Vietnam on hosting the defense expo, describing it as a platform to advance U.S.-Vietnam cooperation in strategic sectors. Delegation members praised Vietnam’s adaptability and potential for growth, expressing optimism about deepening ties in defense and technology.
Vietnam-Lao defense cooperation
Later on December 18, PM Pham Minh Chinh also met with Lao Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Khamliang Outhakaysone. The two leaders reaffirmed the “special” nature of Vietnam-Lao relations, with defense cooperation being a key pillar.
The Prime Minister pledged Vietnam’s continued support for Laos in areas such as personnel training, border security, and anti-smuggling operations.
Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration on strategic defense initiatives, including joint military development and bilateral border management.
Lao Defense Minister Khamliang Outhakaysone affirmed his ministry’s commitment to implementing high-level agreements between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral defense ties for mutual development.
