The final stage of the Viettel Marathon 2024 took place on the morning of December 22 at the iconic Angkor Wat. Over 9,000 runners competed on an Asian Athletics Association (AAA)-certified course.
The event featured star athletes from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, including Nguyen Thi Oanh, Hong Le, Nguyen Van Lai, Trung Cuong, Pheara Vann, Terence Lai, and Lodkeo Inthakoumman. Despite the strong competition, Vietnam's runners stood out, outperforming their rivals across all categories.
Nguyen Van Lai, a 38-year-old runner, claimed victory in the men’s 42 km marathon with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 54 seconds. He finished more than 10 minutes ahead of Cambodian runner Pheara Vann.
In the women’s marathon, Hong Le took the gold medal, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 49 minutes, and 14 seconds. She narrowly edged out second-place finisher Bui Thi Thu Ha by just one minute.
Nguyen Thi Oanh, nicknamed the "golden girl" of Vietnamese athletics, competed in the 21 km half marathon after setting a national record earlier this year in Hanoi. She dominated the course at Angkor Wat, finishing first with a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, and 15 seconds, more than six minutes ahead of Cambodia’s Kan Sreyroth.
The Viettel Marathon 2024, held across Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, concluded with great success.
With over 25,000 participants across the three stages and a total prize pool of $150,000, the marathon not only showcased elite athleticism but also fostered cultural exchange and strengthened the bonds of friendship among the three Indochina nations.
