Workers across Vietnam will enjoy a five-day public holiday from Wednesday, April 30, to Sunday, May 4, for Reunification Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1). To accommodate this extended break, employees will work an additional day on Saturday, April 26.
Following the Lunar New Year holiday, Vietnamese workers will also observe a one-day break for the Hung Kings’ Commemoration Day on Monday, April 7 (March 10 in the lunar calendar). Since the holiday falls on a Monday, employees will have a three-day weekend from April 5 to April 7.
For government offices, state employees, and businesses that follow a fixed Saturday-Sunday weekend schedule, the extended holiday will apply automatically. However, organizations with different work schedules can arrange time off based on operational requirements.
The Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs encourages businesses to align their holiday schedules with the government’s calendar. However, companies with essential operations may require employees to work during the holiday period.
Under Vietnam’s Labor Code 2019, employees who work during public holidays must be compensated at a higher rate. Specifically, those working during the day on public holidays receive 300% of their regular daily wage, while employees working night shifts on these holidays are entitled to 390% of their regular pay.
This extended break provides an opportunity for workers to travel, spend time with family, and participate in holiday celebrations across the country.
