Vietnam imported nearly $800 million worth of fruits and vegetables from China in the first 10 months of 2024, raising questions about safety and pricing as markets report rock-bottom costs.
Vietnam has been focusing on exporting fruits rather than meet domestic demand, leading to a monopoly by imports, analyst said.
The export of Vietnamese durian to China through the official channel since September 2022 opened up a new prospect for Vietnam's fruit and vegetable industry.
Vietnam spent some US$473 million importing vegetables and fruits from China between January and August, surging by 74% year-on-year and accounting for 38% of the country’s total veggie and fruit imports.
