The proposed Metro Line 12 (District 7 - Can Gio) would be integrated with the planned Can Gio Bridge, which is scheduled to begin construction on April 30, 2025, and be completed by 2028.
Currently, the only connection between central Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio is the Binh Khanh ferry, crossing the Soai Rap River. The bridge aims to replace the ferry, enhance accessibility, and support major development projects such as the Can Gio land reclamation and international port projects.
Vingroup’s initiative to study a metro line follows Ho Chi Minh City’s master plan adjustments, which include exploring urban rail systems to connect the city center with Can Gio.
Vingroup's commitment
Vingroup believes that a metro line linking Can Gio with the city center aligns with modern transportation trends, meets development needs, and strengthens connectivity.
The company has requested permission to collaborate with the Department of Transport and the consulting team for the Can Gio Bridge project. This partnership would enable technical and investment studies to integrate the metro line with the bridge.
Once the study is complete, a feasible proposal will be submitted to the municipal government for approval.
Ongoing discussions and directives
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport held a meeting on January 6 to discuss the metro proposal with relevant agencies and Vingroup.
During the meeting, Vingroup agreed to submit formal documentation detailing the project’s technical scope, research parameters, investment format, funding sources, and the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.
This information will assist the Department of Transport in advising the municipal government on the next steps for the project.
Vision for integrated development
The proposal aligns with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s vision for engaging major corporations in infrastructure projects. During the Ho Chi Minh City Planning Conference for 2021–2030, the Prime Minister highlighted a personal conversation with billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, Vingroup’s Chairman, about building a metro system from the city center to Can Gio.
“The Chairman of Vingroup was enthusiastic about the idea,” the Prime Minister remarked, urging the city to entrust key projects to major enterprises as part of its planning execution.
In response, Nguyen Van Nen, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, pledged to implement the approved plans and follow the directives from the Prime Minister and relevant ministries.
