According to the General Department of Customs, Vietnam imported approximately $304.3 million worth of fruits and vegetables in December 2024, a significant 74.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Much of this surge was attributed to preparations for the Lunar New Year (Tet), with businesses stocking up on imported produce to meet heightened consumer demand.

The U.S. emerged as the largest supplier during this period, with imports valued at $123.7 million (around 3,093 billion VND), a staggering 176.7% increase from $44.7 million in December 2023. This marks the highest monthly import value for American produce in Vietnam's history.

With a 40.7% share of Vietnam's produce import market, the U.S. officially overtook China (32.8%) as the top supplier during the Tet season.

Consumer preference drives American produce demand

A fruit store owner in Hanoi noted that the period leading up to the Lunar New Year is always a peak shopping season, with families and businesses purchasing produce for personal consumption and gift-giving.

Imported fruits from the U.S. are highly sought after due to their appealing appearance and competitive prices. Popular American fruits such as grapes, Envy apples, Dazzle apples, and EverCrisp apples are among the top sellers.

Prices for these fruits range from 55,000 to 220,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the variety.

These products are widely available in local markets, supermarkets, specialty fruit stores, and even online platforms. U.S. apples and grapes, in particular, have become staples in Tet gift baskets and festive celebrations across the country.
