The APD Center for Art Patronage and Development is delighted to present “MỚ”, a solo exhibition by artist Phạm Trần Việt Nam, curated by Trần Lương.

For the first time in Hanoi, the exhibition will showcase more than 20 distinctive artworks by Phạm Trần Việt Nam The works were made between 2012 and 2023, most of them were recently created during the post-Covid pandemic, including a few large-scale paintings, the largest of which is 3.2 meters wide and 20 meters long. Some works were produced in more than 10 years, resulting from a continuous process of reinventing and restructuring to create new revival identities.

Phạm Trần Việt Nam is one of the few artists in Vietnam who steps into and approaches painting with a primitive spontaneous spirit. His practice challenges both common understanding as well as conventional practice method and conception of painting. By unconventional experiments in scale, material and painting method, abandoning academic standards and biological restraints, he borrows the language of visual art as a medium to search for the dark patches of the internal world and the invisible forms of the external world. Painting here is also seen as a therapeutic method, a language to translate on behalf of other languages, all with their limitation/improbability.

In Phạm Trần Việt Nam’s case, the role of form has become secondary, there is no methodology or formatting orientation in the creative process. Form ‘slips’ into existence unconsciously, directly from emotional energy, which in turn comes from an “another existence’.

This exhibition is the transformation in thinking and practice method of Phạm Trần Việt Nam. The palette is more colorful, the scale is more adaptive to the space and the spirit of his gloomy world is closer to life. This is also the result of a long close collaboration between the artist and curator Trần Lương.

SiaM vol. 24 will bring you back in time, to the exquisite musical scene of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with two masterpieces: the String Trio Op. 9 No. 3 in C minor (composed in 1790) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827), and the Piano Quartet Op. 47 in E-flat major (composed in 1842), an exemplar of the Romance period by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856).

Separated by over half a century, these two pieces were written in quite different styles. If Beethoven’s early String Trio displays the disciplined and shapely structure characteristic of the Classical period (1750 – 1830), then Schumann’s Piano Quartet flourishes in its more personal emotions, typical of the Romantic period (1830 – 1900). That being said, the two compositions do share something: each hold within them an immense force.

Using the same C minor key as his iconic Fate Symphony, the String Trio is often described to be a never-ending accumulation of emotions, whereby the music push you further and further into the infinite spaces of your mind.

Meanwhile, the Quartet offers something softer but equally tenacious, like the love and liveliness felt in a sun-drenched room.

Drawing from the contrast of the strong, memorable emotions that these two pieces inspire, we could think of no better name for SiaM vol. 24 than “Petrichor”, which refers to the smell of the earth after a rainstorm. Nothing quite compares with the shift in sensations, from hearing the rush of the rain to sensing the damp scent of the earth in the quiet, clear atmosphere after a storm.

Exhibition “The Journey of Sustainable Fabric”

10 years ago, Rana Plaza – a garment factory in Bangladesh – collapsed suddenly during working hours, in which more than 1,000 people died, hundreds of people were missing and more than 2,500 people were injured. As a result, it caused a wave of outrage over the global labor situation.

Since then, the organization Fashion Revolution has been established to protect the rights of workers and raise public awareness about fashion consumption. After the successful workshop on sustainable fashion combined with Fashion Revolution in 2022, this year’s event is expected to create a unique experience with the exhibition named “The Journey of Sustainable Fabric”.

Exhibition 2023 will combine the old story of sustainable fashion with many unique perspectives around culture and environment. With the slogan “Weaving Sustainability into Style”, EWA and Fashion Revolution would like to pose a question: Is it possible to make “sustainability” familiar? By discovering the 7-stage journey of sustainable fabric, we bet that viewers can absolutely find out the answer.

The Ouroboros is an ancient circular symbol that depicts a snake or dragon devouring its own tail and is used to represent the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth, just like this potent alchemical symbol of the perpetual nature of existence, this body of work represents beginnings and ends in multiple contexts.

Ouroboros is Hà Minh’s first solo exhibition of paintings and this body of work has been created over a period of three years during an exceptional time in Ha Minh’s life, creativity has been her rudder since her early years and Ouroboros marks the beginning of something new and the end of a chapter of creative practice.

A self-taught painter, Hà has always been propelled by an innate desire to draw and create, she has honed her incredible raw talent through focused independent study, committing to drawing almost entirely from life to acutely develop her capabilities.

The paintings in the series form together a space of fantasy and child-like wonder as well as a space of self-introspection where Hà comes to terms with, and embraces her womanhood and her burgeoning identity as a queer artist.

This exhibition is very special to her because she feels as though she is coming out again, this time not to the world but to herself: “it’s ok to be a woman in this world, you will be fine (and you can even thrive)”.

Adrian Sauer – Light and Dark Stars

Adrian Sauer is an artist from Leipzig, who in the last 20 years has been involved with and paid attention to developments in the medium of photography. His work deals with the changes and consequences of digitalization in photography.

Sauer critically engages with whether Photography can still be seen as a reliable and unbiased image of reality.

In the exhibition „Light and Dark Stars“, which is part of Photo Hanoi 2023, Adrian Sauer’s work can be seen in the University of Fine Arts of Vietnam.

Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) cooperated with Young Artists Club – Vietnam Fine Arts Association to introduce the exhibition “The Gardeners”, with nearly 100 works of 90 artists. Talented young artists from all over the country, diverse in forms from painting, graphics, sculpture to installation and video art.

The Gardeners was originally borrowed from the poem book title “The Gardeners” by poet Rabindranath Tagore. The journey of discovery, creation and artistic work is sometimes very similar to the work process of gardeners that requiring patience, calmness and a peaceful attitude in harmony with the currents of the nature.

Because sometimes, artists have not found what they want in art, but the process of artistic work leads them to creative and successful values that they are not looking for. Tagore’s poetic, erudite, philosophical lyrics have inspired young authors’ latest works.

When speaking of Yin & Yang, each will have their interpretation of the concept, despite it being accustomed to all.

This idea can be seen in contemporary sculptures, specifically ones that follow abstract expressionism, subtly infused with profound notions and emotions. It’s an art that speaks for itself while representing people’s sentiments in modern times.

After the success of two solo exhibitions “It” (2005) and “The Corner to See” (2014), visual artist Tran Trung Thanh remarks on another decade of hard work with the “Harmonize” exhibition.

The artist’s journey in search of answers to questions about history, the development of society, and the intersection of life, science, and art is recorded via more than 30 oil paintings. Accompanying the exhibition is artist Vuong Pat Cam and his impressive works about Hanoi.

Meticulous, persistent, and profound are what we can say about the process of Tran Trung Thanh creating his artworks. Since the Jeunes Regard competition for young artists in 2004, Tran Trung Thanh’s painting style has become more and more bold.

Neither surrealism nor hyperrealism, Tran Trung Thanh encodes his notions of life into unique characters. Each painting presents a social issue of Vietnam or the world along with questions about history, international diplomacy, and the intersection of life – science – art.

“Harmonize” is the third solo exhibition of artist Tran Trung Thanh.

Nguyen Art Foundation (NAF) proudly invites you to the opening of ‘No more, not yet’, an exhibition that looks back on Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai’s shapeshifting artistic practice in all its multiplicity. Winner of the Artist Excellence Award (inaugural edition, initiated by The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre and managed by in-tangible institute), her work is presented here alongside nearly 20 artists whom she calls her colleagues and friends. The exhibition will be on display from February to June 2023 across the campuses of EMASI Nam Long and EMASI Van Phuc.
