According to authorities, the implementation of Decree 168 has led to a significant drop in traffic violations, with better public awareness and increased use of public transportation.

At a press conference on February 6, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Head of the Traffic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City, reported that the implementation of Decree 168 over the past month has led to a notable decrease in traffic violations, including riding on sidewalks, lane violations, and running red lights.

Hai emphasized that public awareness has significantly improved, particularly regarding drunk driving regulations.

More people are also choosing public transport, with many residents of Thu Duc City opting for the metro instead of private vehicles when commuting to downtown HCMC.

Major decline in traffic violations and accidents

As of now, compliance with traffic laws has substantially improved, reducing instances of driving on sidewalks, wrong-lane driving, and going against traffic flow.

Since the enforcement of Decree 168, authorities have issued:

560 fines for running red lights

529 fines for driving against traffic flow

1,401 fines for lane violations

During the Tet holiday, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 15 road traffic accidents, a 35% decrease compared to the previous year. There were no reported railway accidents.

The traffic police handled 4,804 cases of violations, including:

2,373 cases of drunk driving

19 drug-related violations

3 cases of overloading violations

Authorities impounded 5 cars and 2,383 motorbikes, revoked 673 driver’s licenses, and deducted penalty points from 385 cases. The total estimated fines collected reached approximately $900,000.
